Yealm Estuary to Moor

YEM's Tree Seed Sunday takes place in October each year and brings together communities and schools from across the Yealm catchment. 

With different events taking place in each of the Parishes, people gather together to go out foraging for tree seeds in their local area. The seeds are collected and then sown and nurtured in the local schools or at home.

YEM has made a mini-tree seed nursery available to each catchment school in co-operation with Devon Wildlife Trust. This enables the children to plant and nurture their own trees grown from the seed they've collected. Oaks, horse chestnuts and hazel trees are all being grown and schools are already providing seedlings that are then grown on for YEM's tree planting projects.

With the help of local funding, YEM has established three community tree seed propagation nurseries at Cornwood, Yealmpton and Noss Mayo, with a further pending in Wembury.

The nurseries grow on the seedlings until they are big enough to be planted out. This provides YEM with its own stock of trees to be distributed and planted out in the catchment corridor.
