Working together to make a difference

Yealm Estuary to Moor is a voluntary group that works to restore and reconnect wildlife. The success of this work relies upon the support of the community throughout the catchment. YEM encourages everyone, including children and families to explore nature together through volunteering activities, walks and visits, open meetings and engagement with local schools.

Our aims include:

  • Encouraging a passion for nature in all areas of our community; schools, landowners, businesses, residents and visitors

  • Working with communities, organisations and councils that are already invested in the local environment to achieve common aims

  • Strengthening the community’s connection with its local environment through outdoor activities and volunteering

  • Helping nature but also to helping nature help us and our communities

Community Projects

YEM is keen to help encourage a passion for science and nature, particularly with children and young people. To achieve this, we have developed an ongoing collaboration with the schools that serve our community within the Yealm catchment. Our approach is to support pupils and teachers through targeted activities and resources that supports their learning.

By actively helping our wildlife to thrive, we not only preserve the beauty and diversity of our local landscapes but by coming together community we strengthen our connections to nature and each other. Even the smallest action helps – and collectively what we can amount is amazing.

Schools programmes

All of primary schools in the catchment have nature-based activities as part of the curriculum. YEM works to provide support in each school according to need, but also to create connections between the schools.

YEM works in partnership with expert organisations to deliver advice, ideas and practical support for exploring nature. This support is offered to Pre-School and Primary Schools within the Yealm catchment.

YEM supports A-Level Environmental Science at Ivybridge Community College. We collaborate with the school and other organisations to facilitate field studies and research opportunities for the students.

Community projects

Starting with a community seed collection event every autumn through school-based tree seed nurseries and community tree nurseries we produce over a thousand whips for planting out as trees or for hedgerows.

YEM works in partnership to get expert guidance. Together with the community we can plant trees, orchards and hedges, create wildflower meadows, ponds, wetland areas, improve waterways and monitor the impact.

Together with landowners and volunteers we are better understanding what and where invasive species are impacting on our catchment. The necessary action can then be taken to remove/control them.
